REPRESENTING PARKINSON’S PATIENTS ACROSS THE US

Paraquat is a weed-killing herbicide that is commonly used by industrial farming operations on crops across the US. However, various studies since 2009 have linked paraquat exposure to Parkinson’s disease, and victims are starting to seek justice.

Patients who used have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and previously used paraquat may be entitled to compensation. If you or a loved one has suffered from neurological side effects like Parkinson’s disease after using paraquat, our expert attorneys will work to get you the compensation you deserve.

HOW DOES PARAQUAT CAUSE PARKINSON’S?

Paraquat is a weed-killing herbicide used by industrial farms that has been found to be toxic to those who are exposed to it. Studies have shown that using paraquat can cause serious side effects for agricultural laborers working closely with this pesticide, as well as residents living within close proximity to a commercial farm using paraquat. The high toxicity of Paraquat makes it a serious threat to those who breathe, ingest, or come into contact with the herbicide.

Several large studies have linked Parkinson’s disease as one of the most serious side effects of paraquat exposure. According to the Unified Parkinson’s Advocacy Council, researchers have concluded that chronic exposure to paraquat can increase the chances of developing Parkinson’s disease by 200 – 600%.

STUDIES CONTINUE TO LINK PARQUAT WITH PARKINSON’S DISEASE

Paraquat goes by many names – Blanco, Bonfire Herbicide, Cyclone, Devour, Firestorm, Gramixel, Gramaxone, Helmquat, Para-SHOT, Paraquat, Parazone, Quik-Quat, and more. As an RUP (Restricted Use Pesticide), paraquat can only be purchased or used by certified “licensed applicators”, meaning the herbicide is used exclusively by large, industrial farms across the country. Despite being illegal in 32 other countries, the weed killer is still used by many of the larger agricultural operations in the country.

Starting in 2009, research began being published that warned about the risks of paraquat and its potential link with the development of Parkinson’s disease. Since then, various other studies have found paraquat to be responsible for dangerous side effects and an increased likelihood of Parkinson’s disease. Below is a timeline of the research linking paraquat with Parkinson’s:

2009 – American Journal of Epidemiology published findings suggesting exposure to Paraquat within 550 yards of a home increases the Parkinson’s disease risk by 75%.
2011 – Environmental Health Perspectives published that Parkinson’s disease was “positively associated” with paraquat exposure.
2011 – NIH FAME study published farmers using paraquat are 2 1/2 times more likely to develop Parkinson’s.
2012 – Genetic Modification Association of Paraquat and Parkinson’s Disease published that individuals with certain genetic variation are 11 times more likely to develop Parkinson’s.
2016, March – EPA announced they would be exploring health risks with paraquat.
2016, December – Nature Chemical Biology published that paraquat kills cells through a mechanism called oxidative stress, which is linked to Parkinson’s disease.
2017 – The Unified Parkinson’s Advocacy Council urged the EPA to end the use of paraquat because of its connection to Parkinson’s disease.

Research is still ongoing to determine the full extent of damage and side effects caused by using paraquat.
