Paragard Lawsuit
Since 2010, The FDA has received over 2,200 reports of unexpected Paragard breakage, perforation, and migration. Paragard manufacturers are now facing lawsuits alleging that they failed to properly warn patients about the potential for the intrauterine birth control device to break during or before removal.

How does Paragard cause damage and injury?
The Paragard Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a plastic and copper wire form of birth control designed to be implanted into a woman’s uterus to prevent pregnancy. The device works by continually releasing small amounts of copper into the uterus to disturb the lining and prevent egg implantation. It is a long-term, but reversible, form of contraception.
The small, T-shaped Paragard IUD is both inserted and removed by a qualified medical professional. However, the device has been found to cause issues by breaking during removal, often leading to painful complications, infections, and revisional surgeries.
Other injuries and side effects associated with the Paragard IUD include:
- Perforation of the uterus
- Migration of the device
- Copper wire left in body
- Pelvic pain
- Expulsion
- Infections
- Scarring
- Organ damage
The Paragard IUD has also been associated with fracturing even before the device was removed, leading to similar issues and complications.
Official reports of Paragard causing damage.
The Paragard IUD was first approved by the FDA in 1984, and since the late eighties has been widely recommended by medical professionals. However, since 2010 The FDA has received well over 2,200 reports of injury or harm caused by Paragard, usually due to the device fracturing either during or prior to removal. The breaking of the IUD has resulted in people having fractured IUD pieces still inside of them, often having to endure invasive procedures or surgeries after a failed removal.
A hospital in 2014 reported four Paragard devices which were fractured upon removal. The report states that three of the four involved devices were well under their expected lifespan for the IUD. Many other similar but distinct instances have been reported by patients and health professionals alike.
Compensation For Paragard Injury Patients
Women are taking legal action against the manufacturers of Paragard for failing to warn consumers of the frequent and dangerous complications that can result when the device breaks. Many women have reported issues such as missing or broken pieces upon removal and additional surgical procedures required for removal. You may be eligible for a compensation claim if:
- You’ve used the Paragard IUD for contraception
- Your Paragard broke during [OR] prior to removal of the device, requiring surgical removal
- Removal of the device was attempted less than 10 years after it was implanted
